The celebration of body modifications is becoming more common and Portsmouth hosted its own Tattoo Festival at the weekend. Held at the Pyramids Centre in Southsea over the first Saturday and Sunday in April, the festival invites artists from around the country to come and celebrate all things body modification.
Bournemouth tattoo artist @bunnystattoos (Meg) was one of the artists invited to the convention this year. With the tattoo industry being male dominated Meg offers a unique perspective, she said, ‘You have to have a different idea of how to start your business, that’s why I’ve kinda done it all differently, as in the way I set myself up online and my Instagram’.
As a young woman in the tattoo industry it was a nod to how the tattoo industry is becoming more inclusive. ‘It's easy to feel intimidated at these events. Because, I only just started out really. I’ve only been doing it for a year. It’s kind of intimidating I suppose, exciting though.’
This event celebrated acceptance. In a world where many are judged for the art they choose to present on their bodies, having a safe and open area where people are able to showcase art however they wish was wonderful.
The range of people who showed up to the event showed how inclusive the industry is becoming. From the ages of 18 up to 70+, equal split of men and women. Some even made a family day out of it. It was a weekend event that welcomed everyone, Portsmouth put on quite a show. With such a variety of artists, taking walk-ins over the weekend, it’s the perfect place to start your tattoo journey, or to add to it.
